How can I generate a secure random password?

1 min read

Why a Secure Password Matters #

Weak or reused passwords are a leading cause of account breaches, identity theft, and data loss. A truly secure password is long, random, and unique to each account — this prevents attackers from using “credential stuffing” (trying leaked passwords from one site on another) or brute-force guessing tools that can crack simple, predictable passwords in seconds. Using a dedicated password generator removes human bias (like using birthdays or common words), ensuring maximum entropy and protection for your accounts, financial data, and personal information.

How to Use RANDOM.ORG’s Password Generator #

  1. Visit random.org/passwords.
  2. Set the number of passwords you’d like to generate (e.g., 5).
  3. Choose the password length — 16+ characters is recommended for strong security.
  4. Select whether to include digits, uppercase/lowercase letters, and special characters.
  5. Click Get Passwords. RANDOM.ORG uses true atmospheric noise as a source of randomness, making the results cryptographically unpredictable.
  6. Copy your chosen password and store it in a secure password manager (never in plain text).

How to Use LastPass’s Password Generator #

  1. Go to lastpass.com/features/password-generator.
  2. Use the slider to set your desired password length (12–20+ characters recommended).
  3. Toggle options for uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
  4. Click Generate Password to instantly create a random, secure password.
  5. Click Copy Password and save it directly into your LastPass vault (or another password manager) so you don’t have to memorize it.
  6. Repeat for each account — never reuse the same password twice.
Pro tip: Pair a generated password with two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever available for an extra layer of protection.
