What is a Dedicated Server and Do I Need One?
A dedicated server is a server that hosts just one website at a time, or in some cases one client at a time. This client may host several websites on their Dedicated Server. Dedicated servers can be expensive as the hosting company doesn’t have 100 or more clients each paying their slice of the server. In this case, you would be paying for it by yourself, so you would have a much higher cost.
However, there are some major benefits to having your own dedicated server. The first one would be that since you are the only person using the server, you don’t have to worry about other websites being bandwidth hogs or worry about another website being hacked and potentially putting your website at risk. You basically “own” the server so you can put on it what you want. You have all the CPU, memory, disk, and I/O to yourself. In many cases you would hire your web host to manage the dedicated server, allowing you to focus on your business and not a server.
Since the host is managing the server, they are responsible for upgrades and applying security patches to the server, to keep the bad guys out of it.
So Do You Need One?
Likely not, as most of our clients fit very comfortably into a shared server, however, some could benefit from a dedicated server.
If you are going to send a ton of emails every week, then you might benefit from a dedicated server.
If your website needs to be “high performance” then you might benefit from a dedicated server.
If you are going to be building custom web apps and building a very robust website, then you certainly would benefit from a dedicated server
But like I said a majority of our clients would not really take advantage of a dedicated server.
