Does Your Business Really Need Facebook?

The knee-jerk answer is a resounding yes, but once you start to examine it, that yes could turn into a no for some businesses.

First, let me state that Facebook is not the end-all, be-all. Just as Google controls 85% of the search engine market, Facebook is the king of social media, so having a Facebook presence isn’t going to hurt unless you do it wrong.

What, wrong? How can I do Facebook wrong? Let me explain first.

You have a Facebook page for your business, and you are happy with how it looks. Let me ask you some questions about it. Does this page carry your company branding? Is it visually clear in the header photo which company you are? We often see things like a plumber having a large header photo of a group shot of their 50 employees. All right, not bad, and it is cool and shows your company in a different light, but is there a sign or banner that has your company name and logo on it in the photo? In other words, great photo of a bunch of people, but who are they and who do they work for? Maybe you can zoom out and have your trucks on each side of the 50 employees. Maybe they can hold a banner with your company name. That is what we are talking about: branding.

Does your Facebook page answer the following questions:

  • Company name
  • Company location
  • Company phone number
  • Company email
  • Company website
  • Your business hours
  • Your services
  • If you are a storefront operation, then a map to your location
  • Are you actively posting?
  • Are you posting too little or too much?
  • Are you engaged with your followers?
  • Are you posting on the right days of the week?
  • Are you posting at the right times of the day?
  • Are you posting the right type of content?

Obviously, the name, location, contact information, hours, and map are all common sense, but often forgotten in the rush to get the page up and operational.

What do I mean by posting too little or too much?

Let’s jump to your Facebook friends and your Facebook wall. When you are mindlessly scrolling on Facebook, if you see a friend that has posted 4,5,6, nope, 7 times now in one day with photos of their new car, nope, make that 8 posts, you start to get annoyed and think to yourself, “I couldn’t care less about your new car“. Well, if you are doing the same thing on your business page, followers or potential followers may block you for flooding their personal wall with junk. It is like SPAM to most people, and everything you post shows up on their wall. Well, that technically isn’t true; it is more like 60% of what you post shows up on their wall, and that percentage varies widely depending on how engaged you two are and several other factors. That is where the “Are you engaged with your followers?” comes into play. If someone posts a comment, you should either reply to it or like it; otherwise, they will see fewer of your posts. Yep, the Facebook algorithm is that smart. Therefore, you need to be actively engaged with your followers. In addition, you should visit their page and periodically like and comment on their posts. This will ultimately help you.

This is why so many businesses hire a social media manager, so they can take care of the grunt work for you. This person can post, reply to comments, and interact with your business’s followers on your behalf.

Did you know that the day of the week that you make a post actually plays into Facebook’s algorithm? Did you know that the time of day you post also affects the algorithm? Moreover, not all this post stuff is going to be effective if you are not posting the right content. In addition, that content varies from business to business, product to product, and service to service. A social media manager can ensure you are posting the right content at the right time.

That is why you should hire a professional to manage your business’s Facebook page.
